Conflict/Resolution - Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Author's Note: I'm writing this as a conflict/resolution piece to the book, the Lightning Thief. It explains the conflicts in the book and how they are resolved and how one is not resolved.

In Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Percy is struggling through boarding school when he finds out he's a demigod - half human, half god. He travels to a demigod summer camp, where he tries to save the world. The gods are fighting among one another, and their war is causing disturbances on Earth. Percy is also angry with his father, Poseidon, for abandoning him to fight through various boarding schools. On his way to the summer camp, he and his mother are ambushed by a Minotaur and Percy's mother is kidnapped, taken to the Underworld. In this book there are many conflicts, with the main one being person vs. person and the secondary conflicts being person vs. self.

The main conflict in this story spans the entire series, and is only resolved in the last book, the Last Olympian, when Percy and his friends Grover and Annabeth prevent the gods from destroying each other. This conflict is person vs. person because there are two groups of people fighting each other. Percy resolves a person vs. self conflict with his dad when Poseidon sees him more often and their bond grows from a thread to a thick rope, although Percy still slightly resents Poseidon for abandoning him. Near the end of the book, Percy travels to the Underworld and rescues his mother from Hades and the clutches of death to solve a person vs. person conflict.

The main conflict in this book is that the gods are warring with each other and causing terrible storms while they're at it. This conflict is somewhat resolved as the book progresses, but is not fully resolved until the fifth and last book in the series. The main conflict was not resolved because there was too much going on to have the war stuffed into a 400 page book. Percy and his friends manage to do some pretty heroic things throughout the book, preventing the gods from warring with each other and destroying the world.
