The Mixed Blessings of Moving

Author's Note: In our literature group we read a short story by Francisco Jiménez titled "The Circuit". I found the story quite interesting to read and analyze. In this piece I am focusing on idea development and content.

In the short story "The Circuit", the author had a intriguing plot line with unexpected twists and turns. At the beginning, the family had a tough harvesting life. They then moved into a rotting garage and the boy started to go to school to learn basic education. When all these affairs are starting to go right, the brick wall the boy built came crashing down on top of him. Moving can be a tribulation for everyone and will be hard on the family, but good can sometimes come out of bad matters.

At the beginning of the story, everything is fine during the harvesting season. Right when you would think everything would go right, it does the opposite. Leading up to the rise to power, he starts to fit in at school and they get used to their garage. At the rise to power, the boy is going to school, learning English, about to learn how to play the trumpet, but everything is taken away instantly after the boy is starting to do well. It is so heartbreaking to move in to a different home, and then get kicked out right away.

While moving can be hard, it can sometimes be a mixed blessing. If you are about to move or have a similar trial coming up, try looking at the good side of your situation. My family and I were going to move this summer because of a job opportunity west of Madison and I wasn't at all looking forward to it. I then thought to myself about all the good parts that would come out of it, and a lot of pressure was released. Although I'm staying here, it is a good way to see that moving isn't horrible. It will take your mind off the bad part and help you realize that it isn't completely terrible.

Good can come out of moving even if you don't think so, and can bring many opportunities. If you had bad relationship with people at school, or had a bad job, or the area was full of crime, moving might be good. There is usually some good in something that you would normally think be bad.

I like that you incorporated the symbols into the paragraphs without going on and on about all the symbols and getting off topic. The intro was very good and you had a very good idea. I could really see the idea development coming out. I saw a couple grammer issues, and maybe you could work on fitting the voice to the piece, but good job.

  2. I really like the strong thesis. The stylistic way of using a metaphor in the introduction is also nice. I'm not so sure about the first few sentences of the intro. They read like a summary of sorts. The balance approach to comparison contrast is also an excellent choice. However, to improve this, look to being more thorough, and including more text evidence so we as readers see that this idea is really part of the text. Nice conclusion; you are really getting the hang of wha ta conclusion should do.
